I was born here. I lived most of my life in California.
Physically, it’s the best state in the country.
Psychologically, it’s the worst.
Financially, it’s unsustainable.
And on corruption — I suspect we’re about to learn just how deep it really runs.
California isn’t failing because of geography or diversity or bad luck. It’s failing because accountability was replaced with ideology, and consequences were replaced with messaging.
If we California-ize the nation, we don’t get a bigger California.
George, really interesting personal story there. My closest body of water is the Scotts Flat Reservoir. That makes us neighbors. As long as I have responsive, interested, intelligent readers I will continue producing the best output possible. People respond to polemics, but a steady diet would get tiresome. I’m glad this one hit.
Hello Jim, I don't know how you find the time to produce quality essays one after the other, but keep it up.
When Newsom was a SF Supervisor my doctors office was just up the block from his Fillmore st. wine shop. Being a wine enthusiast I'd often go in to check out the inventory. Newsom was often busy stocking the shelves, moving his handtruck from here to there. He seemed to enjoy that work & that is where he belongs, not running CA & certainly not in the oval office.

Another awesome essay. Only the corrupt voting practices and low information voters in California have kept him in Sacramento. Trump sidelining him in Davos and Bessett’s roast were humiliating and heartwarming. This essay and picture of him with his sugar daddy Soros should be front and center in the 2028 campaign should he have the audacity to run.
I’ve lived in California all my very long life and this essay is spot on . California used to be truly a “ golden “ place to live…. Economically thriving, ecologically cared for, safe and inspirational. Now it is none of those things thanks to Democratic Party leadership which sees only to the next election and how they can stay in power by any means available legal or not.
Hey Beezer. It is a bit off-brand for me but maybe that makes it better. Sometimes you need to tell it like it is. This man would be a complete disaster for our country. Maybe worse than Kamala — if that is possible. I didn’t even include his worst act: nullifying every Republican in the state by supporting draconian redistricting.

We lose the country.

The best description of Gavin-the-Gruesome I have ever read. It is a sad tale but I am grateful you told it Jim, thank you

I had a feeling Ms Sandra would opine in this space. The theatrics in Davos were pure comedy.
