Thank you, Jim. For me, this was one of your best. Buckley was the guy that started me down the conservative road and gave me that solid foundation. I never realized how much he did for me and my thought processes until I read your article. God Bless.
He was brilliant. That is when i realized that conservatives are smarter than liberals. At least in the ways that make a practical difference. Some things never change, philosophically.
Thanks for the memory. I started my subscription to National Review in my senior year in high school (1962) and have been a subscriber for the past 64 years. Although I did not always agreee with Buckley's analysis (e.g. the civil rights movement), I appreciated his insights into the American culture and how it was trending and he has been proven more right than wrong over the years. Politics is downstream of culture.
I read “God And Man At Yale” as a freshman in college in 1956. That book was what turned me around and I became a conservative from then on. Buckley was way ahead of his time. He saw in the 1950s where America could be headed and sought to sound the alarm. He was especially prescient about college faculty becoming more and more progressive and their proselytizing of students. The education unions have done to the secondary and grammer schools what college and graduate professors have done to post secondary education. The apotheosis of what he feared appeared in the Obama and Biden administrations. Now America faces an even worse apocalypse if the DSA prevails. American voters had better wake the hell up!!!
One of my first careers was public school teaching. I enjoyed it and it was quite fulfilling. Started in 1974 and finished up a decade later. One thing teaching did for me was give me enough time in the summer to pursue a new career (Computer Science). But leaving public education was a push-pull experience: I was motivated by the excitement and challenge of a new technical field, but at the same time was becoming disenchanted with the emerging teacher unions. I believe these unions are what has ruined public schools. Their purpose appeared to be to protect the weakest teachers — the ones that had no business being teachers in the first place. And there was no attempt to praise or recognize the strongest performers. Sameness and lack of accountability are what unions brought to the schools. Perhaps we should consider banning the teacher unions. Maybe all public employee unions. Just sayin’.
Very kind words. Much appreciated.
