Bob says, “Victor builds the cathedral. I hand out the visitor’s guide.”

Love VDH but I’m an impatient reader. So I appreciate this new approach to his brilliant writings. The unfiltered version is available for those who wish to dive deeper.

I enjoy Bob's dry humor equally with Victor's insightful analysis.

Wow! Not quite my cup of tea. Hanson is a classicist with an excellent working vocabulary. When he does speak Latin he frequently translates if it is relatively obscure. He does assume the reader is a genuine reader with a reasonable vocabulary,. And yes, he has a style, unique and reasonably comfortable. Like most anything, he can be "translated"by tech-speak. But to me at least, his charm is in watching his word choices, occasionally looking up a word, and generally marveling at his style. I agree that your approach can consolidate his message but in doing so it strips the romance, the excitement of discovery and frankly, the enjoyment of pure reading. Today, newscasters regularly make grammatical error when speaking (i.e., "different than" rather than "different from") and we are told this is acceptable because of its common use. I wasn't taught this way. Yes, my English is probably old school but I personally prefer Hanson unfiltered, untranslated, untainted by techspeak or modern translation. Just sayin'.

Always fun to read it in plain English.
