Thanks. My goal is to reach 10 youngsters and get them to modify their behavior enough to make the future versions of themselves better. That’s all. Free advice from a person who has made his share of mistakes and wins. The principles never change.

Correct. You and I have much in common. we started near, but not at the bottom of the socioeconomic pyramid. I found my way through college and med school. The Navy paid for much of my education. I paid them back with 32 years of service.

Harold, you are right that there is much in common. However, while you were making your way through med school I was trying my hardest not to be the last person drafted and sent off to Viet Nam. My 2S deferment had run out in 1972 and this is what I faced. It worked out in a way that must be told on these pages. Like everything else in my life, it became a story worth telling. Another difference is that while you became a career Navy surgeon, I taught in the public schools for ten years and then did what no other vested teacher does: change careers. So my life included both a public career and a private career. I enjoyed both but being paid more for worthy contributions was terrific incentive — the kind public servants are disallowed in today’s world. Thank you for your service. Everybody reading this appreciates that dedication.

Jm, music to my ears. I hope they get something out of it. If any other readers sent it along to the younger generation, please let me know. It is the best “payment” I can think of. Jim
